After searching for websites about university and post secondary in general, I came up with more “party” sites than I could count. Now I like a good party as much as the next person (I only drink when I’m alone or with friends) but the whole search was getting a little more than ridiculous. Then came Canadian-Universities.net, a beacon in the fog, a prince among men, and the thing that kept me from shouting obscenities at the computer screen (this time anyway). Canadian-Universities.net gets down to business. No frills or clichéd advice here.
Upon going to the home page you can find an orderly subject list to spring off to search for your university information needs (I spent five minutes trying to come up with that sentence, now I’d appreciate it if you don’t laugh!). Since this site is as orderly as my grandma’s underwear drawer (no, I’ve never seen it but grandmas seem like they would keep orderly underwear drawers – get the pun?), this review will return the favour.
I went to “Test Preparation.” This is not about how to take a university exam but rather information about the aptitude tests that many of you may take to get into grad school, although I prefer to rely on my dashing good looks and exemplary brown nosing skills. Some of the test headings include the LSAT, GMAT, GRE, MCAT, SAT, PSAT, and ACT. To find out what these abbreviations mean you have to go to the website like I did. This section basically is a paragraph about each test and ads for study guides, so now you know where to go if you want to buy them.
“Universities” is pretty straightforward — a list of all Canadian universities organized by province and links to their webpages. It’s a thorough list and well organized. “Schools and Faculties” has a list of law schools, MBA programs and medical schools in Canada. These two pages are good starting points if you want to research other universities in Canada.
“How to Study” is not yet complete but I liked the lone article about term papers. “University Info” has all the information you need about actual campuses and contact information. “Getting Into University” has all the application information links for Canadian universities. “Info for Students” and “Post Graduate Info” is just what they say. In a nutshell this website has taken links to university webpages and organized them into categories. They know what they’re doing.
Neat Stuff: Under the heading “University Info” there is a list of links to campus maps. Kind of interesting seeing how the different buildings are situated in other campuses. I wonder with all that walking if on-campus students are more in shape than us?
Not so Neat Stuff: For the not so easily amused, this site has no frills and bows to keep you captivated, but hey use your imagination instead!

No, this site is not about Agatha Christie or Jonathan Kellerman. It is not about figuring out murder mysteries or playing games. The truth is, I have no idea what this site is about and I hope you can help me out. If Canadian-universities.net is the prime example of orderly data, Malevole.com is its bizarro twin.
The home page is cool looking but I wasn’t sure what to do first. I decided to go to “Who..?”. This site is run by a lad called Matt Round. He has a UK web design company, an odd fascination with voles, a wicked sense of humor and seems to be really weird.
This site is scattered with the author’s web log entries, links to strange and funny sites (check out the Vole Appreciation site http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/2857/vole.html), a hodge podge of articles and arty, ironic photos ( try to find my favorite *hint- rubber gloves never looked so creepy).
The “notes” on the home page (check it out, you’ll know what I mean), seem to be a mix of ramblings and links to odd and wonderful news stories. For example, one “note” is an article about toxoplasmosis and another a link to a video game download.
It’s really hard to make sense of this website. It seems to be a dumping ground for Matt Round’s creativity, musings and overall brain activity.
Basically I don’t have much else to say about this website. It’s interesting, maybe a peek inside a creative mind, or use it as an excuse to goof off. Check out Malevole.com and let me know what you come up with.
Neat Stuff: Check out the “Serial Killer or Programming Language Inventor” quiz. Look at snapshots of different men and you guess if they’re a serial killer or you guessed it, a programming language inventor. It turns out the two are very similar
Not so Neat Stuff: Like I said before this website is really disorganized, but if you can sift through it I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
