I live in a small town in central BC with my husband and my dogs. I love to get outside whether that is hiking, kayaking, taking the dogs for a walk, or spey fishing for steelhead. I have had the privilege to complete several backpacking trips from the historic gold rush Chilkoot trail in the north, the Brazeau Loop, to the West Coast Trail and many in between. I have also made the trip around the Bowron Lakes circuit a couple times and fully intend to go back.

When I am not escaping to the bush I am working as a Literary Intern, bookkeeper, social media advertising, and working on my own creative writing projects. I love learning about the publishing industry and the intricacies that work within it. I love working with agencies and being able to see the publishing world from their perspective. As might be assumed by now I am an avid bookworm and I am always working on building up my own collection. Some of my favourites include Suzanne by Anais Barbeau-Lavelette translated by Rhonda Mullins, Ru by Kim Thuy, The Vegetarian by Han Kang, and I could go on.

Remembrance Day Made Real

When I was seventeen I had an opportunity to travel with some of my class to Europe. The trip was organized so students could attend the 60th anniversary of D. Day at Juno beach. I remembered watching advertisements about the celebration a year before the events; I thought how amazing it would be to attend,… Read more »

Biking and Climbing Fish

I was listening to a podcast by Sarah Werner about the things that we weren’t taught in school, things like how to do our taxes, or the importance of and differences in healthcare. Many every day things that were missed to teach us what we needed to know to get through standardized testing. It reminded… Read more »

Leave Sent Material Be

The best editing is done after the send/submit button is pressed. A sad truth but a truth nonetheless. I tormented myself with assignments, articles, and creative works that I would edit until I could recite every word by memory, edit some more after that, and then hit submit when I felt I could no longer… Read more »

Determination, Persistence, and Patience

What are they keys to success? According to most motivational posters it is hard work that pays off. While this is true, I think there is more depth than this. Success is achieved by those who hold on no matter what, who fight for what they want, who work hard every day, don’t lose sight… Read more »

Woman’s Best Friend

I’m not sure where the phrase, “man’s best friend” came from. Perhaps it was meant in a wider view of the term “man” as in huMANkind? I am an animal lover; I have always had pets of some variety. Even when I lived in an apartment that didn’t allow animals I got a hamster. Though,… Read more »

The Art of the Resume

Writing a resume and cover is about as much fun as going to the dentist. There is a delicate balance between showing your skillset, and coming off as conceited. You need to show confidence but also humility. We have been taught that it is best to be humble, to downplay our strengths and not appear… Read more »

Owning Your Choices

Last week, I wrote an article about fear; whether it was motivating you or holding you back. Sometimes, it is the fear of other’s opinions and perceptions, perceived or otherwise. By this I mean, making a choice because someone has either told you that you should take this road, or you believe that is what… Read more »

Understanding Our Fear

It seems that often what motives us to do, or not do, something is fear: fear of missing out, fear of heights, fear of danger. Sometimes these fears are justified and keep us from doing things we do not want to do, and will serve no purpose for us. While this topic can be wide… Read more »

Technology – A Warning

Early in my academic stint I instilled it into myself to back up my files. I always thought I understood the importance of this, and I always saved my work before walking away from the computer. But it wasn’t until late one evening, after I had been working at the kitchen table for hours, the… Read more »

Instagram for Writers

Last week I briefly touched on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and how each of these can be useful for networking and building your contacts. I find rather frequently that Instagram gets ignored from those whose work consists of words or from professions that are not image-based. Instagram and Twitter can be seen as primarily “the… Read more »
