Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

The Voice Candidate Questions

Thirteen seats are open on AUSU Student Council.  These are the seats that students will sit in and who will be responsible for taking your concerns and your issues to the university, the provincial government, and beyond. This election, we have ten students vying for these seats, but it’s not just automatic.  It still comes… Read more »

Editorial—MAD about Russia

It’s been quite a few years since the idea of there being a global nuclear war ending life on earth has been prevalent in popular culture.  But I remember when the mini-series “The Day After” was one of the most anticipated, and then talked about series people had seen. Since then, glasnost, 911, climate change… Read more »

Editorial—Democracy on the Small Scale

The nomination period has closed, the candidates have been validated, the campaign period opened, and the latest AUSU election is underway. This year, we have 10 candidates vying for 12 seats.  Only five of the ten have served on council before, with notable absences including the current president and the current vice-president finance and administration… Read more »

Editorial—We Need You

If you’re not aware, many of the regular writers you read here at The Voice Magazine are actually graduates of AU. No longer active undergraduate students themselves, they still try to keep in touch with the student body and write articles they hope will be appealing or helpful to students like you. But for this… Read more »

Editorial—Reminder

Since my last editorial, Jason Kenney has announced a sudden end to restrictions. And, from what reports I’ve seen, Albertans have started taking advantage of it, flocking to venues and restaurants and gathering in larger groups even as hospitals announced some of the highest numbers of general admittance and the highest numbers of ICU admittance… Read more »

Domestic Borscht on the Road

Being susceptible to migraines, I sometimes wonder why I’ve chosen to live in what some people call the migraine capital of the world.  Most of the time the benefits of this city make the answer to that pretty easy.  Then you get days like happened this weekend, where the temperature in Calgary went from -21… Read more »

Editorial—Freedom of Opinion

Some issues are more difficult than others.  Not because of the technical aspects of editing, but rather because of the content.  It’s tempting for me to look at articles I disagree with and decide to simply not publish them.  But I know I have certain biases, and so I try to err on the side… Read more »

Editorial—Getting in the Research Game

You may have heard that the bachelor’s degree is the high school diploma of the modern world.  And given that Canada is the nation with the highest rate of people with some post-secondary credential around the world, there may be some truth to that. So how do you distinguish yourself among all the others, if… Read more »

Editorial—Welcome to 2022!

We made it! Well, most of us, anyway.  I hope you all enjoyed our Best of issue, and if you missed it, don’t forget that you can always grab the PDF version of it and have it all in one handy file. This is the first all original issue of 2022.  And while it’s not… Read more »

Editorial—Things from 2021 to Celebrate

Let’s face it, it was a rough year. But it wasn’t all bad. Each year, we like to start off the Voice Magazine with a look back at the year before.  Creating a first issue that not only represents what The Voice Magazine is, but what it can be when it hits its heights. Hence,… Read more »
