Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial—Welcome, Welcome!

The votes are in, and your new AUSU Council has been elected!  Congratulations to those who won, and a definite thank you to everyone who ran.  The vote totals show that just under 400 votes were case for the winner, with almost all candidates receiving over 300 votes, meaning that the election was very close…. Editorial—The Lost and the Missing

Yes, I know. It’s been a week and last week’s PDF still hasn’t been put up.  And what’s going on with the website, what happened to the Minds we Meet article I wrote about? The problem is that putting that article up was a bad call on my part. If you don’t know what I’m… Read more »

Editorial—In a Rush

I over-estimated my abilities this week.  I told the candidates for the AUSU election that they could have until midnight on Thursday, Feb 20th, to get their responses to me.  I wanted to make sure they had as long as possible to consider their answers and maybe look into some things that AUSU was currently… Read more »

Editorial—Loving Every Minute of It

Sometimes this job has some interesting turns to it.  Recently it came to my attention that there’s a Facebook group out there devaluing AU degrees by advertising for students and running essay and assignment “sharing” (read, plagiarising) services.  What’s more, it’s doing so using a photograph taken from one of the articles in The Voice… Read more »

Council Connection—January 16, 2020 Meeting

The AUSU Council Meeting took place Thursday, January 16th, 2020 at 6:30 pm-8:30 pm MDT. All Councillors were in attendance. Key items for the council at this meeting were reviewing the 2019 Auditors findings; voting AUSU Bylaw revisions into effect; voting the recommendations of the Executive Compensation Review Committe into effect, reviewing actions taken regarding… Read more »

Editorial—The Clock is Ticking

There’s only a few hours left to get your nomination in if you intend to run for AUSU Council.  If you’re a current student and a Voice reader, I encourage you to put your hat in, you’re probably already better informed about many of the issues AUSU Council is dealing with than many of the… Read more »

Editorial—Too Much to Talk About

I’m a happy camper today.  This issue of The Voice Magazine is one of the better ones, and there’s enough to talk about in it that I don’t think I’ll have room to rant on anything else. To start with, our feature article is an interview with what I’ve come to consider a “typical” AU… Read more »

Editorial—Red Tape Extravaganza!

Welcome to Red Tape Awareness Week.  This week, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses hosted a week where it likes to put a spotlight on government regulations that hamper businesses.  You know, things like regulations that ensure that businesses that want to put out hot meals have the proper equipment to safely cook and process… Read more »

Editorial—Hold on to Your Wallets!

It’s now official.  Athabasca University will be increasing tuitions by 7% across the board.  At the same time, negotiations with the various labour groups at the university seem to be heating up as well, with AUFA having recently done a survey and finding out that almost half of those surveyed don’t trust the senior management… Read more »

Editorial—New for the New Year

The new year has rung in, and at least in Calgary, it’s brought with it some proper winter. Maybe it’s me getting old, but there’s something just off when I can see people walking around in Bermuda shorts in January.  Even in Calgary. Unfortunately, it’s also brought some increased tensions between the Middle East and… Read more »
