Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial—Reasons to Celebrate

Each year, Athabasca University hosts a convocation, where some of the students will gather to receive confirmation that they’ve indeed passed all their requirements and are heading into the world with the piece of paper that elevates their worth.  They likely weren’t that much different the day before, but evaluating skill is hard; that’s why… Read more »

Editorial–What is it with Trucks?

In Toronto, there’s been sightings of a truck driving around with LED screens playing islamaphobic messages.  Rebel “News”, the owner of the truck (though they say they weren’t responsible for the advertisement, suggesting it came from a third party who’d rather not have any of their members identified), say that all it is showing is… Read more »

Editorial—Not a Drop to Drink

Five to seven days has now expanded to three to five weeks before things will be repaired with regard to the Calgary water main.  To deal with this, Calgarians will have to come together and be willing to get a little stinky and have their outdoor plants die.  If we don’t’ deal with this, barring… Read more »

Editorial—Water, Water Everywhere

A massive hole in a major watermain in Calgary has those of us in this city all under a water advisory, with a warning that the whole city may be under a boil water order shortly, and repairs not expected for several days at the very least.  It serves to drive home just how dependant… Read more »

Editorial—The Real PBO Issue

It was recently found that the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO), had found an error in their carbon tax analysis, noting that they essentially included a carbon tax in their calculations that they shouldn’t have. This is being hailed as a victory for the Liberals, who were unhappy that the analysis indicates carbon taxes will have… Read more »

Editorial—Bad Energy

Current predictions for climate change are saying we’ll see somewhere around a 3 degrees centigrade increase in the global temperatures by the end of the century, and possibly by as soon as 2050 depending on your source.  Unfortunately, most predictions around that have concentrated on the biggest changes that might occur, the ones that make… Read more »

Editorial—The Hands are Heavy

A protest as to Israels’ actions in Palestine was recently broken up at the University of Calgary, leading to widespread condemnation of the university and the police actions taken from it’s own legal faculty and student associations alike, including our own AUSU. I’ll be honest, I haven’t had a lot of sympathy for the protests… Read more »

Editorial—So What the Heck Happened?

You’re probably wondering what happened to last week. Honestly, so am I. As you may have noticed, no Voice Magazine came out last week.  What started off as a massive migraine that took me through Friday and lingering effects throughout Saturday basically delayed this issue.  By the time it came to Sunday and I was… Read more »

Editorial—Alberta Inside Baseball

The phrase “inside baseball” actually came from a form of baseball where power hitting the ball was not allowed. Instead, scores could be made through bunts, singles, walks, and stolen bases.  Later it apparently came to mean highly specialized knowledge within a field, ie, what the heck a single actually is, and from there on… Read more »

Editorial—Justified Cynicism

Start your weekend off with some great reads, because we’ve got them! This week, we feature a brand-new interview with a student who I think you’ll be hearing more from very soon.  She’s big into music, has some pretty solid tips for new AU students, and looking to connect with some Calgary AU students.  Why… Read more »
