Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – A Pot of Gold

This was a busy week for Athabasca University and AUSU. If you’re not already aware, the government has appointed a new chair for the AU Board of Governors. Join us in welcoming architect Vivian Manasc as the new chair of the university. Ms. Manasc, as pointed out in an albertapolitics.ca article, is the founder and… Read more »

Editorial – Bringing it Home

If you missed attending any of the teleconference sessions for AU’s government mandated third-party review, I have to say that you missed out. I took the opportunity to drop in to all three and listen in. Not only was it a good chance to be able to share your thoughts and ideas about what could… Read more »

Editorial – Taking the Lead

There are now two leadership campaigns officially underway. Both the NDP and the Conservatives now have a competition with multiple candidates vying to be each party’s new leader. I haven’t been paying a lot of attention yet, as what the opposition parties do internally won’t have a lot of effect on me, and there’s still… Read more »

Editorial – A Turn for the Worse

My reading lately has taken a turn for the worse. By that I mean I find my attention caught by stories of impending doom and gloom. And no, I’m not just talking about the endless parade of news stemming from the U.S. President’s office. I mean I’m reading about the coming of AI and automation… Read more »

Editorial – Admission of Interest

We don’t often think about admission issues here at Athabasca University, and why would we? The Open policy and distance model means that class rooms don’t fill up, so extra people just means AU has to hire extra tutors. They don’t even require extra office space for many of them, given as tutors, too, often… Read more »

Editorial – Taking Advantage

It’s been quite the week. The AUSU mail-out featuring The Voice Magazine generated a lot of interest, both for the positions described as well as some ideas from students for new articles and columns in some areas that the Voice doesn’t typically cover. I’m hopeful these will pan out and you’ll start to see some… Read more »

Editorial – Double Meanings

I’m doing something a little bit unusual this week. Normally, The Voice Magazine is all original content, and I’m proud of that. But we were running a little light on content this week and I happened to see a story published by a fellow member of the Canadian University Press that I think hits an… Read more »

Editorial – Tired of Trump

I’m tired of Trump watching. If you’re a news junkie like me, you know there’s been wall to wall coverage of pretty much everything the new President does, as well as the reaction to his latest proclamations, but, honestly, I can’t be bothered to care anymore. He’s evidenced so little knowledge of anything at a… Read more »

Editorial – The Third Party’s the Charm

In case you missed the news, the government recently announced the people who would be conducting the long promised third-party review into the future of Athabasca University. If you’re a fairly new student to Athabasca, this may sound particularly concerning, but, sadly, this is nothing new, and really just a continuation of struggles that The… Read more »

Editorial – Super Stitchings

So it turns out that our first regular issue of The Voice Magazine for this year is being published on a Friday the 13th. Fortunately, I’m not one that takes many superstitions very seriously. Of course, you won’t catch me walking under a ladder, but that’s more just common sense—I don’t like to have things… Read more »
