Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – Refer & Um..

If you haven’t read it in the AUSU newsletter already, the new AUSU Health Care plan is starting to be rolled out to students. The details of the plan have been hammered out by AUSU and the plan developer Gallivan & Associates, but before it can be put into place, AUSU wants to make sure… Read more »

Editorial – The Third Law of Unintended Consequences

The brouhaha about the call centre continues to simmer. Most recently, the Athabasca Advocate published a letter from AUSU on the issue, which points out that not only have the students repeatedly contacted them with concerns about the change to the call-centre, despite the assertions of GSA President, Amanda Nielsen, that students are in favor… Read more »

Editorial – The Importance of Being Elected

I’ve been following the reaction to the claims by AU Graduate Students’ Association President, Amanda Nielsen, since I became aware of them in the Athabasca Advocate. I am not the only one who did not like being spoken for, especially with an opinion that was the complete opposite of my own. It seems I’m not… Read more »

Editorial – Surprising Things I Think

This weeks’ “Did You Know?” article features some comments made in the Athabasca Advocate about AU moving to a call centre model. I was quite surprised when I read it, because, apparently, I view call centres as a positive step toward restructuring AU. At least, this is what the president of the Graduate Students’ Association,… Read more »

Editorial – Re-Solved

Welcome back, I hope you all had either a restful or exciting holiday, as is your preference. The beginning of January always strikes me as a bit of a strange time. Having just ended the month previous with a holiday, we should feel somewhat rested when it’s time to return to work, but often it… Read more »

BEST OF THE VOICE – 2013

We start off the year as tradition dictates, with our annual Best of The Voice Magazine. I’ve chosen for you various articles from through-out the year that I think best represent what the Voice was about during 2013. To aid me in this, many of the writers gave suggestions for what they thought were their… Read more »

Editorial – Year’s End

Welcome to the final issue of The Voice Magazine for 2013. Next week we’ll be enjoying Christmas, and I’m hopeful that you will be too. So The Voice Magazine will be on hiatus. That will take us into 2014, with the first issue on January 3rd being the Best Of issue for 2013. All of… Read more »

Council Connection

Last Monday’s Council Meeting was fairly uneventful. Unfortunately, Council has adopted something called a “consent agenda”, which has essentially hidden all Council activity from the students who may attend. Students who attend receive only the agenda, and while there are various reports submitted by the AUSU Executive, staff, and committee chairs, none of those are… Read more »

Editorial – Wrapping Up

With December half way through, now is probably one of the most stressful times of year across North America. This is the time where everything you forgot to do before Christmas suddenly looms. Having to finish everything before the holidays arrive can make these last weeks pass like a whirlwind and leaves many people feeling… Read more »

Editorial – Bad Deals

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employes (AUPE) are the support staff at Athabasca University. They’re the people who process your applications, your loan papers, your library requests, who answer the phones at the information desk and try to get your question to the right person?who is usually another member of the AUPE. They’re also the… Read more »
