I live in a small town in central BC with my husband and my dogs. I love to get outside whether that is hiking, kayaking, taking the dogs for a walk, or spey fishing for steelhead. I have had the privilege to complete several backpacking trips from the historic gold rush Chilkoot trail in the north, the Brazeau Loop, to the West Coast Trail and many in between. I have also made the trip around the Bowron Lakes circuit a couple times and fully intend to go back.

When I am not escaping to the bush I am working as a Literary Intern, bookkeeper, social media advertising, and working on my own creative writing projects. I love learning about the publishing industry and the intricacies that work within it. I love working with agencies and being able to see the publishing world from their perspective. As might be assumed by now I am an avid bookworm and I am always working on building up my own collection. Some of my favourites include Suzanne by Anais Barbeau-Lavelette translated by Rhonda Mullins, Ru by Kim Thuy, The Vegetarian by Han Kang, and I could go on.

Malala

I wrote this article last week, before the tragic events that took place, not only in Paris but around the world. I am appalled at the amount of hatred that has flooded social media since the attack on Paris. Amidst the hate, there have been some incredibly inspiring posts; it was in these posts that… Read more »

Patience

I think it is safe to say that we can all get caught up in time-lines. Getting assignments in as soon as they are done, even if the previous one hasn’t yet been returned. Or registering in classes under the cut-off date of the 10th. If there is one thing I have learned, and keep… Read more »

Another Perspective on Getting Inked

A few weeks ago there was an article about the possible dangers of getting a tattoo. While there are some unknowns in the tattooed world, I would like to present you with another perspective. Getting a tattoo can be a wonderful experience, albeit painful. The most important thing to do before getting a tattoo is… Read more »

Three Steps to Dealing with Writer’s Block

Writer’s block can be a frustrating and intimidating experience. Staring at a blank computer screen, with the cursor blinking defiantly back at you. With each flicker of the cursor the brick wall between the mind and the fingers gets built higher and higher, until it seems there is no way to ever climb over it;… Read more »

Let’s Make a Change

Recently there has been an influx of students commenting that assignment turn-around times are far beyond the standards set out by Athabasca University. Some students remarked on waiting for assignments submitted in August, and wait times of five to seven weeks. It is easy for students to blame their tutor for this wait time. As… Read more »

I Am A Fraud

I’m not a real English Major; I love to read and write, but I am a fraud. I am a punctuation nerd, but still use it incorrectly?this makes me a fake English Major, doesn’t it? According to English Major themed memes and common belief in society all English majors are “grammar Nazis”. It seems in… Read more »

Nature

In the last few days social media, at least mine, has been bombarded with protests against the BC wolf cull. Celebrities, like Miley Cyrus, are taking a stand against the decision, the effect of this is that, while they may not understand the situation, or what it means to live in BC, they are drawing… Read more »

Primal Instincts

One of the things I love about Athabasca University is the flexible schedule. For the first week of September I packed my bags and headed on a five night, six day, kayaking trip around The Bowron Lakes Circuit. This trip is incredible; going out into the wilderness for any length of time tests your resolve… Read more »

Tracked Changes

There are some great features in Microsoft Word; one in particular that I have found helpful, and only recently started using, is the ?Track Changes? tool. I had seen this used by tutors in marking up my essays as well as The Voice Magazine‘s editor, who uses it to mark up my articles. It is… Read more »

The Value of a Degree

Sometimes it is a simple conversation that reminds us why we started this journey. A conversation about nothing regarding to studying, yet it can serve as a much needed reminder. The other day I was chatting with my cousin about weekend plans and she casually mentioned not being able to find a book covering specific… Read more »
