Deanna Roney

I live in a small town in central BC with my husband and my dogs. I love to get outside whether that is hiking, kayaking, taking the dogs for a walk, or spey fishing for steelhead. I have had the privilege to complete several backpacking trips from the historic gold rush Chilkoot trail in the north, the Brazeau Loop, to the West Coast Trail and many in between. I have also made the trip around the Bowron Lakes circuit a couple times and fully intend to go back.

When I am not escaping to the bush I am working as a Literary Intern, bookkeeper, social media advertising, and working on my own creative writing projects. I love learning about the publishing industry and the intricacies that work within it. I love working with agencies and being able to see the publishing world from their perspective. As might be assumed by now I am an avid bookworm and I am always working on building up my own collection. Some of my favourites include Suzanne by Anais Barbeau-Lavelette translated by Rhonda Mullins, Ru by Kim Thuy, The Vegetarian by Han Kang, and I could go on.

My Philosophy

Sometimes it is a simple conversation that reminds us why we started this journey. A conversation about nothing regarding to studying, yet it can serve as a much needed reminder. The other day I was chatting with my cousin about weekend plans and she casually mentioned not being able to find a book covering specific… Read more »

Get Out and Vote

With the world being filled with various politicians campaigning, and our own student union running an election, I think it is important to stop and consider the power of our single vote. While politics are not my strong suit, I never miss an opportunity to have my say; whether voting in town elections, federal government,… Read more »

The Art of Procrastination

The art of procrastinating; it is a skill learned through trial and error. Though perhaps a skill I wish I did not possess, it is one that I have perfected. I am lucky that I am often able to work through my desire to procrastinate, however, there are some days, some assignments, which overpower my… Read more »

Do as I Say, Not as I Do

I have been busy reorganizing and refreshing our home. When I do that I like to have some background noise and will usually throw on a movie. Nothing too good, as it will suck me in and I will end up watching the movie instead of getting the task at hand done. So yesterday it… Read more »

Riding the Storm

I needed to take a break from the books and get back into the wilderness, surround myself with nature, and lose myself for a while. Lucky for me, my Mom is always ready and willing to head out into the wild, so last week we loaded our kayaks into the back of the truck and… Read more »

Isolation

One of the hardest things that I have found I have had to deal with as a distance-learning student is the feeling of isolation. When you attend a traditional university you are surrounded by your peers?like-minded people taking the same courses you are. I live in a small community and, while I am able to… Read more »

Time For Yourself

Over the course of my degree my addiction to books has only increased. I have been introduced to new genres and authors. As a result I have been adding books to my “to read list” and to my “to buy list” I have also bought several and added them to my bookshelf to be read… Read more »

Oh Where Art Thou, Globe and Mail

Through the forums on my English 384 Creative non-fiction course site, I learned that the Globe and Mail was accepting submissions. Usually before I consider what I am going to submit I like to look through the magazine, or in this case, paper: What articles are they running? What is the tone? Who are their… Read more »

Teachings from the Hounds

These last few days have been a trying time. I took one of our dogs into the veterinary clinic on Friday, concerned as he was not acting like himself. I thought he was constipated, and was worried that he might have a chunk of bone lodged somewhere in his system. What started out as a… Read more »

Informal Course Evaluations

I often see questions about course recommendations. Thankfully, I have been told that the course evaluations should be back up and running by September. Until then I thought I would share some insights into courses that I have loved, struggled through, and bumped my GPA. The course that I wish I had taken earlier in… Read more »
