Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial—The Dose with the Most

You’ll have to excuse me this week, there remain a couple of articles to get up on the web, and the PDF is nowhere near complete yet. The problem is that on Thursday, I received my second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.  (Moderna, in my case.)  I didn’t think this would be any problem because… Read more »

Editorial—Bi-Election 2021

This week, our feature article is an interview with not one student, but nine of them!  In this case, it’s nine of the eleven candidates running in the AUSU’s 2021 By-Election (or is it now a Bi-election, since it’s happened twice this term?) We sent out a quick set of interview questions to the candidates… Read more »

Questioning the Candidates—2021 AUSU By-Election Edition

In just a few days (June 24th, watch your e-mail), AUSU Council will begin accepting votes for the current by-election. With six seats available on Council, that’s just under half the total votes, nearly enough to change the entire direction that Council is going, so it’s important that you consider who want to take those… Read more »

Editorial—What’s With the Names?

Every day, the Voice Magazine uploads a select article to the website just to give you a sneak-peek of what’s coming up in the magazine on Friday.  If you’re one of the people who take advantage of that sneak peek, you may have noticed something odd earlier in the week.  Our site was listing me… Read more »

Editorial—The Schools of Bart Simpson

Despite how transmissible COVID-19 is, I couldn’t say for sure if I knew anybody who’d actually had the disease.  I have my suspicions about certain members of my family, but nothing definitive.  Until now, at least.  With some 40,000 students attending AU, it makes sense that at least some of us have had COVID-19, and… Read more »

Editorial—Not to be Pessimistic

Here in Alberta, Premier Kenney’s laid out an ambitious schedule for a nearly full re-opening; one that just happens to coincide nicely with the timing of the Stampede.  If all goes to plan, the Alberta should be pretty much wide open just a week or so before the doors to the Stampede open. And honestly,… Read more »

Editorial—And the Winner Is…Part Two

And the Winner Is.. Part Two So, the fiction contest winners are in and published, what happened to the non-fiction side of the contest? It took a little longer than expected for the non-fiction judges to come to a decision, largely because of e-mail issues, but a decision has been made.  The category for the… Read more »

Editorial—Must Reads

If you haven’t checked out any of our contest winners, now is definitely the time. This week we’re presenting the fiction winner of The Voice Writing contest, it’s entitled Stray Dogs and is a story that is absolutely worth the read.  Seriously, I’d love to just go on about this one, but I don’t want… Read more »

Council Connection—April 21, 2021 AUSU Council Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 6:28pm with eight of the, at that time, ten remaining councillors present. Absent were councillors Monique Durette and councillor Kathryn Hadden. President Stacey Hutchings lead the group with land acknowledgements, while others noted their own  location in the Zoom chat.  I’ll be honest, I have no clue what… Read more »

Editorial—Champions

AU students come from all walks of life, and though I don’t think it would be hard to describe any single one of us as a champion in some form or another, this week, our feature article is with a student who’s an actual champion.  A two-time Canadian champion bodybuilder, in fact.  Read more about… Read more »
