Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial—Academic Mercenaries

In a convenient bit of timing, this week I had the opportunity to attend a press conference and technical briefing with the AB government about Phase III of their review of Alberta’s Agencies, Boards, and Commissions.  This phase dealt with post-secondary institutions, specifically the Presidents of the universities, although other senior management staff will also… Read more »

Editorial—Sweet Job if you Can Get It

There’s been somewhat of a kerfuffle over at U of A over the past couple weeks since they announced that they might be having to cut their 2018-2019 budget by 4% while raising fees for students who live in residence and international students.  This was exacerbated when Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt spoke of the… Read more »

Editorial—Editorial Control

Dr. Angie Abdou is our feature once again this week, but this time we look at her take on a genre of writing that’s just starting to get some serious academic study, Sports Literature. And while it’s a really good read, my time this week has more been taken up with another piece in this… Read more »

Editorial—AB vs AU

The Alberta government released its penultimate budget yesterday.  This is the last budget that the NDP will be able to implement before having to go through an election so is the budget, the general thinking goes, that should be positioning the Alberta government to make a lot of promises in their next budget.  (Of course,… Read more »

Council Connection

The penultimate meeting of the last student Council was held on March 13, 2018,  starting promptly at 5:30pm.  In addition to the regular council and staff, several members of the new council were also present, listening in to the discussions. Council started by pulling policy 8.09 (the Terms of Reference for the Executive Committee) from… Read more »

Editorial—The Problem with Faking It

This week, our feature article is an interview with AU’s Dr. Angie Abdou, an associate professor in creative writing and novelist. We’ve spoken with Dr. Abdou before in our Meeting the Minds series but this time, instead of looking at her teaching philosophies we talk to her about her process for writing and her thoughts… Read more »

Editorial—Balancing in Easy Mode

I had to think long and hard about the  picture to go with one of our articles this week. In the end, I chose the one that has more risk of being misinterpreted but is also more powerful.  The article in question is “More than a Mouthful” and you can see the picture chosen there. … Read more »

Council Connection—February 13 Meeting

The council meeting on February 13, 2018 was sparsely populated, as both President Wasylyshyn and Executive Director Jodi Campbell were absent with regrets (meaning with prior notice that they wouldn’t be there.)  Councillor Robin Bleich was also absent due to an illness, but fortunately, Councillor Adrew Gray, who’d also indicated he’d be absent with regrets… Read more »

Editorial—Government Goings On

Recently in Alberta, a number of colleges have been granted university and degree granting status.  I don’t really have any problem with this, but I do get annoyed when part of the reasoning why these colleges state they need to be able to grant degrees is because the people in the area have said they… Read more »

Editorial—Drop in, Vote on, and Turn out

February 28 is the first day of voting for the new AUSU council. This will be the group that represents you to AU and to the government for the next two years, including the pivotal 2019 year when both Alberta and the Federal government will have their elections, possibly profoundly affecting the course of post-secondary… Read more »
