Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial—Tuition Lockdown

Recently, it was announced that the NDP government of Alberta has decided that tuition at Alberta’s post-secondary institutions will remain frozen this year, and also expects universities to not raise any of the mandatory fees that they typically require. The government promises to backfill funding to make up for what the allowed increases in tuition… Read more »

Editorial—The Necessary Apology

Today, Prime Minister Trudeau apologized to the survivors of the residential school system in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is part of a $50 million settlement reached between the government of Canada and those survivors.  Lately, I’ve started to see people start to refer to Mr. Trudeau as “The Sorry Prime Minister”, others joke that he’s… Read more »

Editorial—The Long and the Short of It

If you’re following post-secondary news, you already know about the strike action going on across Ontario’s post-secondary institutions.  From what I’ve read, there are two primary sticking points remaining on the table. The first is job security.  Universities and colleges across the province are moving more and more to sessional instructors and Teacher Assistants.  In… Read more »

Editorial—That’s Classified

Not many students seem to know that we have classified advertisement space available for free.  If you’ve got textbooks you want to get rid of, or perhaps you’re looking for someone to buy them from, it certainly can’t hurt to let us know here at The Voice Magazine.  Up to fifty words and we’ll even… Read more »

Editorial-The Joys of Free Stuff

Nothing like a contest to make people sit up and take notice.  Case in point, the number of subscribers to the Voice Magazine have more than doubled since AUSU published our contest to win an iPad mini or one of 25 goodie packages of all new Voice Magazine and AUSU swag. But don’t worry, there’s… Read more »

Editorial – Grand Opening Special

Last week was our “soft opening.”  We brought in this fancy new website, let people poke around and kick some tires, but didn’t really make a lot of hooplah about it, because we wanted to get some of the last kinks worked out.  Like the discussion forums below, which are now separated by story, and… Read more »

Editorial – Welcome One and All

Perhaps you’ve noticed something a bit different about the website this week?  Like how we’re missing a front cover page on the website, or the plethora of pretty pictures providing peeks at the prose within?  Or maybe you noticed the little share buttons at the top which will easily let you spread the good bits… Read more »

Editorial – Let’s Be Clear.

Today is not only Friday the 13ths, but is also international plain language day. This is a day to bring attention to how so much of what we read (and sadly, write) is anything but plain language. From business reports and sales pitches filled with buzzwords that mean nothing, to laws and contracts that have… Read more »

Editorial – To be Thankful

Thanksgiving is upon us already. I don’t know about you but I somehow thought there was still another week left. It seems kind of incongruous when coupled with the recent events in Las Vegas. At least four Canadian families will be having a hard time feeling terribly thankful this weekend, and sometimes it seems like… Read more »

Editorial – What’s Inside

I always find it interesting when some of our writers, working without knowledge of each other, seem to come together with a type of theme. This week, that theme is a loose connection of advice and strategies for when you’re seeking out work. I know that some students at AU have been at this university… Read more »
