Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – All in Favour

This week, the Alberta Budget was released. If you haven’t seen anything about it in the news, you haven’t been looking. For Albertans, the big take-away is that our province is looking at a 10-billion-dollar deficit. The same deficit that the federal Liberals said they’d be taking for the entire country (of course, they’ve since… Read more »

Editorial – What Do We Stand For?

Last week we had an article from Barb Lehtiniemi about some of the dangers that come from changing the bylaws, as well as a letter from Colleen Doucette, the outgoing VP External about student engagement, and that got me thinking. We also received a response to Colleen’s letter from another student, where she argues that… Read more »

Editorial: Paradox of Fools

I dislike April Fools day. I realize saying that paints me as a grump with no sense of humor, but honestly, the entire notion of having to have a day (or rather, half-day as supposedly pranking someone after noon says that you’re the fool who didn’t know the rules) devoted to pranking people just seems,… Read more »

Editorial – Hidden Crimes

It’s unfortunate that acting like a human can preclude you from receiving justice. I’m speaking of the Jian Gomeshi trial. If you’re unaware, CBC personality Jian Gomeshi was accused of sexually assaulting three women, and choking one. He has been acquitted of all charges. His defense was not that there was no violence or sexual… Read more »

Editorial – Kinship

First things first, congratulations need to be given to the new AUSU Council. It might seem like an acclamation is a sure thing but as this Maclean’s article shows, running unopposed does not guarantee a win. This week, we do a course exam on English 255, a course which is a required component for many… Read more »

Council Connection

The meeting of March 10th, 2016 was largely uneventful. There were three major items of note, two reports by committees of AUSU, and the first vote on the changes to the bylaws of the organization. This meeting saw the presentation of the Forensic Audit Committee, a committee that was established in response to a request… Read more »

Editorial – All Sorts of Acclaim

You remember that Voice reader survey? The one that I was asking you people to do and was offering prizes to a few lucky people? Well those are all handled now, and the prizes are winging their way to the winners. So if I haven’t contacted you about winning a prize already, then I’m afraid… Read more »

Editorial – In Sickness and in Health

TANSTAAFL. If you’ve never seen that before, it stands for “There Ain’t No Such Thing A Free Lunch.” Last week, I went on about the benefits of Ontario’s new policy of making tuition free for lower income students. This week, Barb L. comes back with the other side of the story, as she digs into… Read more »

Editorial – Affordance

The big news this week is what happened in Ontario. With their most recent budget, they’re making it so that people with a low income will have a much easier time getting an education. Families with an income of less than 50k will have an average tuition of free. More importantly for AU, they’re also… Read more »

Editorial – Way Too Much to Do

I can’t believe I’ve managed to get this far already. You’ll notice this is an extra big issue, in part because in addition to our usual goodness, we’ve got a Council Connection, the article on the Voice Reader Survey that I promised (complete with pretty pictures), an interview with none other than the President of… Read more »
