Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – Way Too Much to Do

I can’t believe I’ve managed to get this far already. You’ll notice this is an extra big issue, in part because in addition to our usual goodness, we’ve got a Council Connection, the article on the Voice Reader Survey that I promised (complete with pretty pictures), an interview with none other than the President of… Read more »

Council Connection

The Council Meeting for February 11, 2016 started at 4:30 pm, with the biggest take-away from the meeting being that AUSU Council decided to first accept the bylaws that the students at AUSU had previously accepted, as a first step to bringing the organization into line with the requirements of the Alberta Post-Secondary Learning Act… Read more »

Editorial – Love is in the Air

Happy almost Valentines Day! This year, some of the writers and I have been working together more to try to develop ideas for theme based issues. On purpose. What You’re seeing is the first of those. I don’t know yet when the next one will be (if I don’t have one for Talk Like a… Read more »

Editorial – Last Chance to Win

That’s right, I’m going to use this editorial to pump the survey one more time. It’ll be open until late Sunday night, then on Monday morning I’ll start putting together a report on the results. After all, one thing the survey has shown me already, we do like to know about ourselves. So go to… Read more »

Editorial – Survey Asks!

Excuse me if this seems terse this week, there’s currently a chinook coming into Calgary, and, like almost every time there’s a chinook, It’s accompanied by a nasty head-ache. Every year, I try to get out at least one survey so that I have a little guidance as to what you, the students, think of… Read more »

Editorial – World’s Fasted Editorial

Why do I keep doing this to myself? This week, we have some 35 pages of content in The Voice Magazine. It could have been shorter, I technically could have left out one or two of the regular columns that arrived late, but it was just good stuff and I always feel like I should… Read more »

Council Connection – January 14, 2016 Meeting

On January 14th at 4:30 p.m., council held its public meeting, but not a lot new happened in public. The big takeaway is that there is now a committee reviewing AUSU’s executive compensation, and a seat is open for a student member. If You’re interested in the position, write to executivedirector@ausu.org. Also noteworthy, council had… Read more »

Editorial – Not Out of the Woods

As distance students, one of the things we don’t get is a sense of any of the politics that go on at the University. I’ve been fortunate enough (or perhaps that’s indecisive enough) to have attended both distance and bricks & mortar institutions, and I found that even if you aren’t involved in the discussions… Read more »

The Best of 2015 – What More do you Need to Know?

So what’s involved in a Best Of issue? Do I just pick the stuff I like, and foist it off on you people as the Best of? Well, in some cases, yes, that’s exactly what happens. However, most of this issue was picked by students. I don’t get a lot of responses to my calls… Read more »

Editorial – Happy Holidays!

Just before we get going here, I have to point out and apologize for an error that was made in the last issue. We said (or more particularly, I did, as I write the opening blurb for the Meeting the Minds column) that Dr. Diehl-Jones is with AU’s Faculty of Health Sciences. This was a… Read more »
