Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – The Social and Cultural Significance of Borscht

Because this issue officially marks my first full year, I was initially planning this week’s editorial to be a discussion of The Voice Magazine’s history, and why certain things (such as our website) seem so out of date. The short version? Because it is. However, with the events that happened in Ottawa, and a lot… Read more »

The End of the Revolution

Welcome to the last issue of The Voice Magazine for 2014, and Happy Holidays! If You’re reading this, it means you’ve almost completed yet another trip around the sun, travelling over 93 million miles only to end up exactly where we were before. But hopefully in the course of that revolution, things have changed for… Read more »

Editorial – What’s The Best Of Anyway?

Along with the end of the year comes a plethora of lists, telling us the best and worst of various things that happened during this revolution around the sun. The Voice Magazine is no exception to this, as the first issue each year is a look back at all of the articles we presented, and… Read more »

Editorial – The Road Avoided

Lately I’ve been considering what to do for further education. I finished my Bachelor’s of Arts, English major from Athabasca University (with Great Distinction, if you’ll allow me a moment to boast) a couple years ago, and I’ve been floundering back and forth with what to do next. I’ve got a couple of years into… Read more »

Editorial – A Billion Here, A Billion There

So on November 20th, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) went to the federal government asking for an additional 2.84 billion to be devoted to post-secondary issues, which would take care of Canada’s post-secondary funding problem. While I certainly admire and applaud the intent, I do question the timing. This federal government has been quite… Read more »

Editorial – The Meaning of a Magazine

Lately I’ve been looking at other student publications and considering the similarities and differences between them and The Voice Magazine. One of the things that struck me was simply the amount of content that they manage to get each week, often from unpaid, volunteer writers. Now, The Voice Magazine is not exactly a slouch in… Read more »

Editorial – Getting Back to Normal

The last couple of issues have seen my editorials taken over by unexpected developments, which means that some of the things I’ve been wanting to talk about have necessarily been set to the side. This week, I’d like to get back to at least one of them, and that’s to announce the winners from The… Read more »

Editorial – Turned Upsidedown

Before you read this article, you should read the AUSU update this week. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Okay? Now, let’s start off with full disclosure. Tamra Ross, former editor-in-chief of The Voice, and former Executive Director of AUSU is also my spouse. You might ask how on earth we can do that without there being… Read more »
