Karl Low

Born and (mostly) raised in Calgary, Karl has been taking courses on and off at AU since 1999. At one point, he changed his major from Computing Science to Computing Science because the new program requirements fit what he’d already taken better. Since then, he switched to English and graduated (w/Great Distinction he likes to add) proving along the way that it is entirely possible to complete an entire AU course within a three week period. If only he had done this at the beginning of the course instead of in the last extension.

This is not something he advises unless you are desperate, masochistic, or, ideally, both.

He is currently the managing editor of The Voice Magazine, where he tries to put his education to use helping other students as they provide content for The Voice

Editorial – Mea Maxima Culpa

If you read last week’s issue after Friday evening, you likely would have noticed my correction to the Council Connection article that I wrote. As it turns out, that started a cascade of events which have lead eventually to this week’s editorial where I want to take the opportunity to clear some things up. First,… Read more »

Did You Know? – Extended Edition

You may not have noticed it yet, because they’re trying to do a “soft launch” just to get the bugs out, but the AUSU Health Care plan, as provided by Gallivan & Associates, is now up and running. So, The Voice Magazine is here to give you some facts about how the plan works and… Read more »

And Miles to go Before I Sleep

Have you entered The Voice Magazine‘s contest yet? You could win a Samsung 8.4″ tablet computer, one that works with AUSU’s e-texts, and has a memory card slot so that you can keep them all on there at once. It can help make your education truly portable, or at the very least, give you a… Read more »

Council Connection

Usually I’m of the mind that more students should attend AUSU Council meetings. they’re generally short, and while the policy portion may seem a bit byzantine, especially because the public meeting packages don’t contain the draft revisions, It’s more than made up for during the report section where students can get an idea of exactly… Read more »

Editorial – It’s All About You!

One of the things that I knew I wanted to do when I took over The Voice Magazine was to try to make it more relevant to you, to us, the AU students. Of course, that’s not a terribly easy task because we’re such a diverse group. From people just getting out of high school… Read more »

Editorial – Careers and Travel and Surveys, Oh My!

We’re coming up on the end of my first year here, and it seems things are starting to speed up. This week, we’ll have the start of a series of bi-weekly articles to provide distilled advice from various career help books. I think it’s an interesting article just because one of the pieces of advice… Read more »

Editorial – Git Yer Yarr On

You may not be aware of this, but today, September 19th, is “Talk Like a Pirate Day” a lesser known holiday essentially made up by a group of friends that received a mention in a nationally syndicated column and took off. The means of celebrating the day is fairly obvious, add a dash of “Ahoy,… Read more »

Editorial – The Grind

What’s been entertaining you lately? I’ve been working with our survey software trying to translate my notes for exactly the type of things I’m going to be asking AUSU students into a coherent survey. Ideally, you want a survey to quickly get to the things that You’re interested in, and mostly avoid asking about the… Read more »

Council Connection

With only one motion up for discussion, the September 10th meeting of AUSU Council was rather short. All current councillors except Corrina Green were present. Corrina’s absence was due to her being on a plane to Alberta to meet with the AU Board of Governors at their orientation meeting. Also in attendance were two observers,… Read more »

AUSU President – Wildrose Candidate

If you were in Alberta several weeks ago, you may seen some news articles about Jason Nixon unseating Wildrose Candidate Joe Anglin for the riding’s nomination. For those who don’t follow Alberta politics, the Wildrose Party is widely viewed as the party most likely to be able to take power from the Alberta PC’s, which… Read more »
